The Business of Music: Bill Wilson (VP of Digital Strategy for NARM)// BUSINESS 22

Bill Wilson, VP of Digital Strategy and Business Development for NARM

Monday, August 8th from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm.

Join GA's Music Startup Academy creator Bill Wilson, VP of Digital Strategy and Business Development for NARM/DigitalMusic.org, for a 90 minute introductory crash course on the basics of the music business. Through interactive discussion, students will learn to make sense of a very complicated legacy media business. The session will cover the fundamentals, structure, and economics of the industry, including who the major players are, who controls which rights, the org chart of the business, and how each silo interoperates. It will answer common questions, including: What does a label do? What does a publisher do? How do I make sure I'm dealing with the right party? And, What rights do I need if I'm building an app or service?

Bill Wilson leads the charge on all things digital at the National Association for Recording Merchandisers. Prior to joining NARM, Bill spent nearly 20 years running Blackout Records, and served as an A&R consultant for a number of established independent labels. He began working with internet startups in 2001 as Director of Business Development for Roxbox Media, and has been involved with many others since.

General Assembly is pleased to present the Business of X series. Each session, we invite an industry leader to provide a thorough overview of a specific industry, identify major trends, discuss the most interesting things happening in their field and highlight opportunities for disruption. Attendees are encouraged to come prepared to contribute topics for discussion and be active participants in the conversation.

Use the hashtag #gamusicbiz to ask follow-up questions and continue the conversation.
